Bussola Institute Secretary-General, John Dennehy, Director of Corporate Affairs and Strategy, Brian Power, and Research Officer, Nadine Aly, participated in an event at the European Parliament entitled “Returning foreign fighters: The changing strategy of jihadist groups following loss of territory in Iraq and Syria.” The event was co-hosted by the European Foundation for Democracy and the European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR). The panel discussion was moderated by British MEP and ECR Vice Chair, Geoffrey Van Orden, and the two speakers were Laurence Binder, founding partner of the JOS Project, and Pieter van Ostaeyen, Visiting Fellow European Foundation for Democracy. The discussion centered on the roles and responsibilities, if any, of the respective EU/non-EU states in respect to their nationals returning from their involvement in ISIS and the threats posed by their return.
