Equality of Citizenship: The Opportunities and Challenges of Empowering Women During the Pandemic

On 28 April 2021, the Bussola Institute held an online event, entitled “Equality of Citizenship: The Opportunities and Challenges of Empowering Women During the Pandemic".

Following on from previous initiatives under Bussola Institute’s ongoing programme, The Values That Bind Us, this webinar examined the specific challenges and opportunities involved in empowering women, both in Europe and the Gulf, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

COVID-19 and its associated lockdowns have seriously disrupted economic activity, estimated to be affecting at least 80% of the global workforce. While such instability threatens livelihoods across the board, women are disproportionately affected by the pandemic because it exacerbates existing inequalities, presents new challenges, and sets back previous achievements.

COVID-19 has affected women’s economic standing in several ways and restrictions on movement have re-entrenched the traditional roles of women in the household and the workplace, further diminishing their economic position and opportunities.

This webinar examined these challenges and explore the opportunities to build greater equality of citizenship, learning from the adjustments being made in the urgency of this crisis and building on them to create a sustainable means of increasing women’s empowerment in the longer term
